Navigating High-Stakes situations

11/09/2025

Feeling like something has the power to either "make or break" you is an intense and stressful experience. The weight of that kind of pressure can be overwhelming. The good news is, you can take steps to navigate this situation and lessen that all-or-nothing feeling.

Maybe your are relocating.  Maybe you're applying for a new job.  Maybe you are embarking on an overseas solo trip.  Maybe you have a really important presentation to make.  Whatever it is, it doesn't have to be 'all or nothing'.

Reframing the Stakes

First, consider challenging the idea that this one event is the sole determinant of your future. It's often not the case, even though it feels that way right now. One outcome doesn't define your worth, your abilities, or your potential. If things don't go as planned, it's not a failure; it's a learning opportunity.

Practical Steps to Take

To help you feel more in control and less overwhelmed, you can focus on a few practical strategies.

Prepare with a purpose. Instead of just studying or practicing aimlessly, break down what you need to do into smaller, manageable steps. Focus on one task at a time. This makes the overall goal feel less daunting. For example, if you have a big presentation, dedicate a specific block of time to just writing the opening, another to crafting the slides, and another to practicing your delivery.

Plan for a positive outcome. Visualise what success looks like. What do you need to do to achieve it? Imagine yourself performing well and feeling confident. This isn't just wishful thinking; it's a way to prime your mind for success and build confidence.

Plan for a less-than-ideal outcome. This may sound negative, but it's actually an effective way to reduce anxiety. Think about what you would do if things didn't go perfectly. What would your next steps be? Having a backup plan removes some of the fear of failure because you know that no matter what, you have a path forward.

Focus on What You Can Control

Remember, you can only control your effort, your attitude, and your preparation. You can't control the outcome itself or how others will react. By focusing your energy on the things you have power over, you'll feel more centred and less anxious about the unknown.

This situation feels high-stakes, but you have the power to influence the outcome and, more importantly, to navigate the path forward regardless of what happens.
