How do I get my life back on track?
Ever felt like you're just going through the motions, stuck in a rut, or simply lost your way? It's a surprisingly common feeling. Maybe you've gone through a big change—a job loss, a breakup, or a move—or maybe it's a gradual feeling of stagnation that's crept in over time. The good news is, getting your life back on track isn't about finding a secret map; it's about taking small, intentional steps.
At Tailored Life Coaching, we believe that getting back on track starts with understanding where you are now and then deciding where you want to go. It's not about perfection; it's about progress. Here are three key areas to focus on that can help you regain your footing and start moving forward.
1. Reconnect with Your "Why"
Before you can make a plan, you need to remember what truly matters to you. When you feel disconnected, it's often because your daily actions aren't aligned with your core values or long-term goals.
Take a moment to ask yourself:
What brings me joy and energy?
What do I want my life to look and feel like a year from now?
What values do I want to live by (e.g., creativity, community, adventure, stability)?
Write down your answers. This isn't about creating a rigid plan; it's about gaining clarity. This "why" will be your compass, guiding your decisions and motivating you when things get tough.
2. Focus on Small, Achievable Actions
The idea of "getting your life back on track" can feel overwhelming. Don't try to overhaul everything at once. Instead, choose one or two small, concrete actions you can take this week.
For example:
If you want to improve your health, start with a 15-minute walk each day.
If you feel professionally stagnant, spend 30 minutes updating your resume or researching one new skill.
If you want to feel more connected, reach out to one friend you haven't spoken to in a while.
Each small win builds momentum and confidence. You're not just crossing an item off a to-do list; you're proving to yourself that you are capable of change. Consistency with small actions is far more powerful than sporadic bursts of grand effort.
3. Be Kind to Yourself
This is arguably the most important step. When you're feeling lost, it's easy to fall into a cycle of self-criticism. You might think, "I should have figured this out by now," or "I'm not doing enough." These thoughts are unhelpful and only add to the weight you're already feeling.
Recognise that everyone experiences periods of feeling lost or stuck. It's part of the human journey. Practice self-compassion by acknowledging your feelings without judgment. Treat yourself with the same kindness and patience you would offer a good friend.
Notice your negative self-talk and consciously reframe it. Instead of "I'm a failure," try "This is a challenging time, but I am learning and growing."
Celebrate your small victories, no matter how minor they seem.
Getting your life back on track isn't a race to the finish line. It's a journey of self-discovery and intentional action. By reconnecting with your purpose, taking small steps, and practicing self-compassion, you can begin to feel more in control and start building a life that feels authentic and fulfilling.
