Big Emotions:  How Tailored Life Coaching can help..

Do you ever struggle with big emotions?  By big I mean, really angry, really sad, really lost, really frustrated e.t.c.  Often these situations can overwhelm us and we struggle to unhook from them.  They can consume us, affecting our health, sleep, work and relationships.  Below is a list of steps that are designed to help us unhook or detach from these big feelings.  They really work.....

Acknowledge and Label:

  • Recognize the emotion and name it. Saying "I feel angry" or "I'm starting to panic" can help detach from the intensity.

Create Space:

  • Take deep breaths or use calming techniques like progressive muscle relaxation. This can interrupt the emotional response.

Shift Your Focus:

  • Engage your senses. Notice five things you see, four things you can touch, three things you hear, etc. This grounds you in the present moment.

Challenge Negative Thoughts:

  • Are your thoughts about the situation realistic? Are you catastrophising or personalising the situation? Reframing negative thoughts can reduce emotional intensity.

Self-Soothe:

  • Do something kind for yourself. Take a warm bath, listen to calming music, or spend time in nature.

Seek Support:

  • Talk to a trusted friend, therapist, coach or counselor. Sharing your emotions can help you process them.

Remember, it's okay to feel big emotions. The goal is to learn to manage them in a healthy way so they don't control you.
